Abstract

Small rural properties usually are lacking in management through information systems. Thus, this study presents the selection and implementation process of a management system devoted to collecting and organizing small rural properties’ information areas and activities. A case study was carried out on a fruit-growing small family farm. The identification of the business requirements was followed by: the search for management systems that meet these requirements, the evaluation of available commercial software, the selection of software that adheres to the property’s processes, its implantation, and the evaluation of the results obtained. As a result, it is understood that the steps presented can help other properties, considering their particularities, in the implementation of computational management systems. In the property analyzed in this case study, there was greater economic sustainability and security in decision-making due to the bargaining power based on data. Still, the appreciation of the role of each family member in the management of the business motivated the young people to dedicate themselves to the property.
