Antropólogo que atua no Centro de Pós-Graduação da Universidade da Cidade de New York na época que produziu este texto atuava na Universidade de Hull. Ele obteve o título de Doutor em Filosofia pela Universidade de Oxford em 1968 e conduziu uma extensa pesquisa antropológica sobre temas como as tribos beduínas, o nacionalismo árabe, a religião e os sistemas políticos. O Dr. Asad possui inúmeras publicações, incluindo The Kababish Arabs: Authority and Consent in a Nomadic Tribe (1970), Anthropology and the Colonial Encounter (editor e colaborador, 1973), The Sociology of Developing Societies: The Middle East (coeditor com Roger Owen, 1983), Ideology, Class and the Origin of the Islamic State (in Economy and Society, 1980), e The Idea of a non-Western Anthropology (in Current Anthropology, 1980). O Professor Asad apresentou este trabalho no Centro de Estudos Árabes Contemporâneos em 1984-1985 no Annual Distinguished Lecture in Arab Studies.
