A essência do ser humano, presente em cada indivíduo e compartilhada com o outro, define sua própria identidade. A noção de intersubjetividade, introduzida por Ricoeur e interpretada por Jervolino, sugere que a subjetividade é um presente, uma vez que cada pessoa é o outro do outro e só se torna um indivíduo nessa condição. Jervolino (1996) destaca que, embora se morra sozinho, apenas os vivos experimentam a morte, e a vida está diretamente ligada aos outros. Se a morte é um ato de individualidade, é somente ao se reconhecer os desejos em meio à comunidade dos seres humanos que se torna um ato de vida.
