The focus of this work is on the Financial Education that takes place in the school environment. It is believed that educating yourself financially is not just the responsibility of consumers in general, but also of students and the school. Thus, our objective is to investigate the understanding of elementary school students about consumption through a mathematics activity. The activity involves the analysis of the water consumption and water bill of a building, with a group of five students, with ages between 12 and 14 years old, from the eighth grade of elementary school at a public school in the city of Orobó (PE). After concluding the activity, we invited students to an individual interview to discuss the answers presented. The questions had the objective of generating a discussion about consumption and planning of the family budget, which answers from a mathematical point of view could not reach. The results show that mathematics alone is not enough to solve problems based on real-life, indicating the need for a discussion based on Financial Education. In conclusion, we highlight that mathematics activities can be a rich tool for reflections on Financial Education and that the role of the teacher is of great importance in this process.
