Abstract

This article aims, given the relevance of malacoculture for the economic development of the
region of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, to show how the learning processes, routines and action
of public institutions in the development of the activity occur. To achieve this objective,
interview were carried out with two associations of producers, the Association of Maricultores
of South of the Island (AMASI) and Association of Maricultores and Professional Fishermen
of the South of Island (AMPROSUL) located in Ribeirão da Ilha, and managers of the
Agricultural Research and Rural Extension Company of Santa Catarina (EPAGRI). Despite the
fact commercial malacoculture is recent in Brazil, having started in Santa Catarina in 1990, it
has expanded significantly, placing the State as the largest mollusk producer in the country. In
this course, the cooperative arrangement involving public teaching, research and extension
institutions and local producers was importante. It is concluded that there are a series of
difficulties to be overcome in this activity related to the continuity of public policies, lack of
manpower, funding limits, restrictions on the adoption of modern techniques, lack os
cooperative that work together, among others.
