This research examines, from the perspective of the Resource Based View – VBR, which
types of returns are offered by corporate spin-offs to their parent companies after their
establishment, as well as the relevance of these returns for the competitive strengthening of
original organizations. Therefore, a qualitative research was carried out with multiple case
studies, through semi-structured interviews with executives from six companies involved in
three cases, in addition to seeking additional data in other official sources. The found results
point to the existence of returns for the parent companies after the creation of the spin-offs
through four types of resources: human, social, technological and organizational, which
generate competitive strengthening for the parents. This study also allowed the evaluation of access, by the spin-offs, to resources provided by their respective parent companies; the
identification of similarities in the trajectories for the creation of spin-offs; and the elaboration
of management recommendations for the creation and development of this type of enterprise.
