This article was structured to answer the following question: what are the characteristics of patent-filing startups in Minas Gerais? To address this inquiry, the study employed a descriptive qualitative research methodology utilizing documentary research from the databases of the Minas Gerais startup census and patent deposit reports from the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI). Data were compiled using native tools in Microsoft Excel and the map generator Philcarto. Following the systematization of collected data, the main findings indicated that patent-filing startups in Minas Gerais are characterized by several key aspects: the majority are not derived from academic spin-offs; the manufacturing sector represents the majority of patent-filing startups; and these companies are predominantly located in regions with major research centers and technological parks in Minas Gerais. This work contributes to understanding the nature of innovations produced by these firms and may serve as a foundation for shaping public and private policies aimed at fostering innovation in startups.
