In addition to classic human capital measures such as age and education, marital status is a significant determinant of male earnings. This study examines the relationship between marriage, cohabitation, the characteristics of the wife or partner, and work remuneration from a male perspective. The goal is to understand how the wage premiums and penalties observed for married and cohabiting men in Brazil are associated with their wives’ or partners’ education and labor market participation. Linear regression models were applied to data from a sample of adult, urban, and employed Brazilian men. The findings highlight a positive association between women’s education and male earnings, reinforcing the argument of shared human capital. The results also reveal differences in the impact of the wife’s or partner’s characteristics, particularly education and work hours, on the earnings of married and cohabiting men. These differences suggest that these factors are perceived and rewarded differently in the labor market and reflect varying expectations and responsibilities within these unions.
