Abstract

This is a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach developed with 120 students attending a pharmacy school in a city located in northern Minas Gerais through the application of a semi-structured questionnaire, whose data were analyzed using the Predictive Analytics Software (PASW), performing descriptive statistics. We noted that 68.3% of respondents stated that they read the package inserts; most (94.2%) knew what information the package inserts should contain. The most frequently read items were: indications (n=83), adverse effects (n=68), dosage (n=63) and contraindications (n=51). We found that they had difficulties in reading and interpreting the package inserts related to very long texts (n=42) and small prints (n=30). We can conclude that there are a portion of students who, besides not reading the package inserts , are not aware of their importance. We believe that the findings of this study may contribute to raising awareness about the importance of reading the package inserts of medicines, especially by students who will be future pharmacists and have the role of warning the population about the proper use of medications, thereby contributing to the success of pharmacotherapy.
