Abstract

The objective of this article is to understand and analyze how diplomatic relations between Brazil and the Middle East evolved and, more specifically, what was Brazil's position in the Arab-Israeli conflict during the Ernesto Geisel administration (1974-1979). Acknowledging that such period was marked by great turmoil in the most diverse fields, the central hypothesis is that, with the Geisel government, a new phase in relations between Brazil and the Middle East was inaugurated, but more specifically, between Brazil and Palestine, leaving aside the hitherto prevailing "equidistance" between Israel and Palestine and moving towards a more pro-Palestinian position.
