Abstract

This article has as its aim to analyse how the failure of the Somalian State contributes to the endurance of piracy in the Gulf of Aden. The article’s argument is that the State’s inefficiency to provide public goods, in addition to social and political disarray, constitutes a scenario of collapse of official governmental structures, in this scenario the citizens are left to its own luck. Against this background, there is an incentive for the population to get involved in illegal economic activities, such as piracy.
