Abstract

The article discusses the impact of neoliberal policies aligned with the Washington Consensus on Brazil's social structure during the 1990s in order to deal with the crisis. In this sense, policies of economic openness, privatisation and a reduction in public spending were implemented, in addition to the weakening of labour rights and an increase in the external dependence of the Brazilian economy on the US economy, specifically the dollar. However, the result was a worsening of the social consequences of the overexploitation of the labour force, highlighting the impact of these policies on social inequalities in Brazil. To analyse this, the Marxist Theory of Dependency is used.
