Abstract

For Freire, education is directly related to political and social issues. Educational practice is
the way to transform society. In this article, we report the experience of getting to know the
history of Bairro Jardim Felicidade, located in the northern region of Belo Horizonte, based
on the report of a 59-year-old woman in the process of literacy. We relate some aspects of the
relationship with the sociocultural context of the region and with Paulo Freire's theory. The
importance of valuing the world view of knowledge is important, knowing history is
fundamental to guaranteeing an educational practice based on emancipation and social
transformation.
