Abstract

The present work consists of an experience report on an activity with homemade tea recipes developed by a
teacher in a Municipal School located in the interior of Zona da Mata in Minas Gerais with children aged 10 and
11 from a 5th grade elementary school class. We consider that the characteristics of such practice are like Paulo
Freire's conceptions of education and literacy. In this sense, the objective of this article is, in addition to
presenting the lived experience, to discuss how Paulo Freire's writings contributed to a better understanding of
the relevance of the action carried out for students and for the teacher. In summary, we conclude that exploring
the knowledge of students, as occurred in the activity carried out, can enhance their pedagogical and personal
training, favor the bonding of family and community to the school, and provide greater learning for teachers
about popular knowledge of the community served.
