DIGITAL IMMORTALITY AND GRIEF IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY:

A CONCEPTUAL APPROACH

Abstract

This article seeks to analyze the concept of digital immortality and how it is employed in contemporary society. Thus, through a historical analysis engaging with concepts such as grief, death, and
immortality itself, the text examines the human need to evade one of its defining characteristics mortality in pursuit
of immortality. It thus aims to offer a preliminary analysis of how individuals understand this notion of immortality
within a contemporary context marked by religious and technological promises of eternal life. In the present day,
individuals are able to associate and materialize their sense of immortality through technology, often perceiving it
as a form of salvation. In this way, the concept of digital immortality is shown to be intertwined with the posthuman
condition, late capitalism, the advancement of digital technologies, and the cultural shifts and values brought about
by the twenty-first century. In the first part of the text, we address the historical, cultural, and philosophical
perspectives on mortality and immortality. Next, we discuss the impacts of social transformation on culture, as
well as the construction of the posthuman at the intersection of the natural and the artificial. Finally, we conclude
by presenting digital immortality as a form of digital legacy intended for future generations.
