Representações sobre o feminino e o masculino em gibis da “Turma da Mônica”
Abstract
This is an exploratory and qualitative analysis of gender representations identified in a non-probabilistic sample of Monica, Cebolina, Cascão and Magali’s comic books, produced by Maurício de Souza studios and published between 1991 and 2009. We tried to demonstrate that, although some characters supposedly have some gender characteristics that would be divergent from hegemonic patterns, the analyzed comic books represent men and women (adults or children) with well-marked and hierarchical physical and behavioral characteristics. These representations reproduce essentialist conceptions of gender identities and presuppose innate differences between men and women and compulsory heterosexuality. This work adds to others in their efforts to understand the permanence of representational systems about women and men in a specific segment of the Brazilian cultural industry, in a period of important advances in identity and social policies for women in the country.
