Abstract

We sleep for about a third of our lives. It is something we do in addition to work and other activities. The impression remains that sleep is simply inactivity of the body, a simple rest. However, studies in recent decades have shown that sleep is very active and involved in numerous benefits for physical and mental health. Chronobiology, a field closely related to sleep medicine, helps us understand the relevance of the subject. The article considers the sleep stages and how polysomnography objectively accesses them and other parameters. The sleep architecture is described. Emphasis is given to sleep apnea, its repercussions on overall health, and CPAP treatment. Sleep hygiene, as a method for providing good sleep, and pharmacological treatment, especially for insomnia, are discussed. There is no doubt that we must sleep and sleep well.
