TOWARDS A PSYCHOLOGY OF POSITIVITY: A PSYCHOSOCIAL AND INSTITUTIONAL ANALYSIS OF STIGMA AGAINST PEOPLE LIVING WITH AIDS AND HIV

The AIDS epidemic has left a legacy that is now as or even more deadly than the virus itself: the stigma against people living with AIDS and HIV (PLWHA). Still hindered from occupying spaces, restricted in their affections, and victimized by prejudice reinforced by misinformation, the majority of PLWHA experience post-traumatic stress disorder, a consequence of disdain, violence, and exclusion. However, when considering the psychosocial impact of the epidemic and its psychological consequences, we can also contemplate the role of the psychology professional in relation to practices in this scenario. Supported by theoretical references from Social Psychology, Institutional Psychology, and work in Mental Health, this study seeks to analyze sociohistorically the various consequences and issues arising from the stigma against positive individuals in order to strengthen the practical actions of psychology in addressing this issue.
