Abstract

Caring for a child and adolescent with heart disease includes drug treatment, special diets and frequent hospitalizations, which generates a great difficulty of adherence to the treatment, both for the patient and for their caregivers. The empowerment vision, which consists of helping the patient to develop a high level of knowledge about their own health values, needs and goals, is an alternative way of thinking about adherence. The aim of this study was to develop, implement and evaluate an empowerment program for caregivers of children and adolescents with heart disease. Caregivers of patients aged 0 to 18 years with congenital heart disease participated in the study, who underwent a psychoeducation group on treatment adherence and answered questionnaires before and after participating in the five meetings. The main results, based on the questionnaires applied, which assessed quality of life and coping strategies, indicate that participation in the meetings sensitized caregivers to empowerment. The importance of the perception and performance of the multiprofessional team regarding the active role of patients and caregivers is recognized, considering that their beliefs, values and life goals are an initial step towards the goal of adherence to treatment.
