HYDROELECTRIC PLANTS CONSTRUCTION AND SOCIAL SUFFERING OF THE PEOPLE AFFECTED

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the changes in living and working conditions of the remaining population affected by the construction of Itá hydroelectric power plant in southern Brazil as well as the relations between this process and social and environmental suffering. The qualitative study was based on participant research. Forty-three people affected by the construction of Itá hydroelectric power plant were interviewed. Data were submitted to Minayos’s thematic analysis. The results of the research showed that after the reservoir filling the researched population experienced the loss of the river, extinction of rural work, lack of access to potable water, energy, means of transportation, health, education, leisure and work, which lead to an intense suffering expressed through collective discouragement, sadness, loneliness and insecurity.
