Abstract

Considering the increased hiring of doulas by women seeking a humanized childbirth experience and protected from obstetric violence, we sought to understand the affective-emotional meanings attributed by the parturient to the doula’s figure. We selected from the YouTube site ten videos in which mothers report their personal experience of doula assisted childbirth. The psychoanalytic analysis of the material resulted in three fields of affective-emotional meaning: “(De)Humanized childbirth”, which reveals the fear of obstetric violence and the imagination that humanization means the absence of interventions; “Empowered, but accompanied”, which communicates the value of the companion for the empowerment and protagonism of women in labor; and, “Mary Poppins’ bag”, which alludes to the magical place occupied by the doula in the feminine imagination. We conclude by the need to overcome the resistance from healthcare professionals so that care practices that integrate physical, psychological and social care during the delivery process are implemented.
