Abstract

In this article, we discuss the complexity of the manifestations of psychological distress, taking as a reference the medical-psychiatric idea of anorexia nervosa. For this, we present a single case whose protagonist we named Edita (Sheisaid), a proper name in the Spanish language adopted here to make it clear that we examined not what she says, but what ten health professionals said about (and for) her, in granting us interviews. The speeches were analyzed with the support of the discourse analysis and linguistic devices, specifically anaphors and predications. The generated narratives showed how the speeches create “an anorexic” that approaches and, at the same time, distances herself from objective diagnostic criteria, causing frustration in professionals. In this way, we problematize the effects of practices and protocol discourses in order to contribute to the debate about classifications and health care.
