Abstract

We explore the effects of the law 12.711/2012 and its naming in the Brazilian context departing from two propositions. First, we justify the historical need for its implementation by focusing on the centrality of the racial issue in the social formation of Brazil. Then, we explore some of the positive consequences that its implementation brings to the university context, both from a demographic/statistical and from an epistemic point of view. To this end, we rely on the experience of the Grupo de Estudos Pretos (GEP) at PUC Minas to demonstrate the extent to which collective experiences play the role of activating an epistemic function that tensions the traditional modes of production of academic knowledge. We conclude that the epistemological turn provoked by the group puts into effect the democratic vocation of the public university and instigates critical, plural, and non-homogeneous thinking that underlies its scientific aspirations and its social commitment.
