Cartesian concept of body between Plato and Ponty

Abstract

This paper intends to draw a panorama of the Cartesian discussion through the history of philosophy. Descartes moves away from the platonic ascetism and from the ancient philosophy as he defends our capacity of think for ourselves, but also, by doing so, moves closer to it by diminishing the body in relation to the spirit. Ponty, in an attempt of surpassing Descartes, express a philosophy of the body by affirming that we can only think by, with and trough the body. Following the new paradigm for philosophy, given by the vitalisms and the phenomenologies, body is now implied in knowledge and through the senses we can not only acess them, but process them also.
