AT THE CROSSROADS BETWEEN MESSIANISM AND REVOLUTION

The present work seeks to extract different interpretative levels around the syntagma divine violence, used by Walter Benjamin in his 1921 essay entitled “For a Critique of Violence”. To do so, we will use a reading key that prioritizes the importance of the intersections between the influences of Jewish messianism - especially the category of Redemption - and the category of revolution - anarchic and utopian - in Benjamin's thought. Our effort will consist in groping the clues left by Gershom Scholem and the comments of authors of Walter Benjamin's work who dialogue and dissertate on the theological references of Walter Benjamin's thought and choose to contextualize the discussions in which Benjamin was inserted in the period when he wrote his essay (such as the tensions with Kant's critical philosophy, the entrance of Marxian references through Ernst Bloch and the discussions around Jewish categories of thought in the interlocutions with Scholem). Thus, we will develop the heretical affinities between messianism and revolution that emanate from Benjaminian divine violence and the various layers of reading that this syntagma can reveal. In addition to the meanings, astonishments and countless interpretative quarrels and dissensions that divine violence - and its anarchic, revolutionary and eschatological character - causes among philosophers and commentators of Walter Benjamin's work. We will also make comments on how the images created by Benjamin, from political and telogical-political terms, present themselves as an attempt to expand the possibilities of a radical political grammar beyond the impoverished “realism” of certain modes of doing and thinking political philosophy.
