Recognizing in Hegel’s Philosophy of Spirit (1803/1804)

The aim of this paper is to determine the meaning of "recognizing" (das Anerkennen) in Hegel's Philosophy of Spirit (1803/1804). Our thesis is that recognizing institutes the spirit of a people because it is the moment of the genetic movement of the spirit by which the totality of consciousness achieved in the family is sublated as absolute totality through the struggle for the whole, giving rise to the formation of the absolute consciousness of a people. Moreover, recognizing is constitutive of the spirit of a people because it is the spiritual movement by which the singular consciousnesses intuit and know themselves in the universality of their customs, in the common ethical work that is the product of the activity of all as conscious beings, thus cancelling the opposition with the other singular consciousnesses and realizing the spirit as the absolute totality of consciousness and customary substance of a people. With the development of this thesis, we will differentiate ourselves from specific interpretations of specialized studies, especially: (a) from that reading for which love is a stage of recognition and (b) from the hermeneutic tendency that centers the recognition established by the universal work on the relations of dependence between the consciousnesses that it implies.
