Since the advent of the adhesive concept, composite resins have been developed, with improvements in this composition, obtaining preference of professionals. However, its chemical components with aging may suffer wich affect directly the color stability. The purpose of this study was to approach the key factors that can influence the results of discoloration and color stability of dental composites, tough a literature review, to suggest the best clinical indications for the material in question. Was performed a search in databases Pubmed/Medline, using the key words: Color Change; Composite Resin; Color Stability; with publications date from January of 2000 to May of 2012. Only papers in English, associated to color change in direct composite resin and in vitro studies were included in this paper. Were found a total of 57 articles, but with the application of the inclusion and exclusion criteria only 29 items were used in this study. The polymerization equipment, the constituents of the material and the type of polishing on composite post restoration be better evaluated in order to increase the color stability and consequently the longevity of the restoration.
