A (RE)CONSTRUÇÃO DA HONRA E DO CARÁTER MODERNO EM ADDISON E SHAFTESBURY

Trata-se ilustrar a maneira pela qual Addison e Shaftesbury reconfiguram as noções de honra e coragem por meio da centralidade que fornecem ao autocontrole e à fraternidade social. Estas, participando da formação do caráter como fundamentais para a manutenção das virtudes, colaborariam com o afloramento da natureza que ambos autores designavam como próprias aos cavalheiros: a sociabilidade. Sendo assim, caberá apresentar de que maneira Addison e Shaftesbury: 1 - desassociam a coragem bélica do ponto de honra cavalheiresco para 2 - reconduzi-la à noção de autocontrole das afecções. Esses movimentos, em última instância, direcionam a honra masculina para a sociabilidade, que seria o verdadeiro meio no qual, para os dois filósofos, os homens podem encontrar a alegria. Ao longo das duas partes, além disso, espero deixar evidente como a noção de homem como animal social é fundamental para a repaginação, proposta por Addison e Shaftesbury, da honra que comporá o caráter polido proposto por ambos os autores.
