Abstract

RESUMO

A determinação da missão da filosofia hoje depende do que se compreende por filosofia. Entretanto, o trabalho não discute sistematicamente esta questão, antes parte de certos aspectos problemáticos da prática filosófica atual no Brasil para por contraste pôr em evidência o autêntico sentido de filosofar e a missão do filósofo hoje. A filosofia poderá cumprir sua missão institucional de promoção da razão crítica na sociedade na medida em que como atividade pessoal e estilo de vida não se deixar aprisionar nas malhas da civilização da eficácia técnica, mas for exercida como pensar gratuito e questionamento radical da verdade que leva ao senso do mistério.

ABSTRACT

The definition of the mission of philosophy today depends upon a certain understanding of philosophy. The paper however does not discuss directly this question. It starts from certain problematic features of the contemporary philosophical practice in order to bring to light the proper sense of philosophizing and of the philosopher’s mission today. Philosophy will perform its institutional mission to promote critical reason in the society as far as it, taken up as a personal task and lifestyle, instead of being entangled in the meshes of the technological civilization, is carried out as gratuitous thinking and radical quest for truth, which leads to a sense of mystery.

João Augusto A.A Mac Dowell, FAJE Faculdade Jesuita de Teologia e Filosofia

Possui graduação em Filosofia pela Faculdade de Filosofia Nossa Senhora Medianeira (1958), graduação em Teologia - Philosophische Theologische Hochschule Sankt Georgen (1962), mestrado em Teologia - Philosophische Theologische Hochschule Sankt Georgen (1963) e doutorado em Filosofia pela Pontifícia Universidade Gregoriana (1968). Membro fundador da Academia Brasileira de Educação (RJ), foi Reitor da PUC-RJ e da Faculdade Jesuita de Filosofia e Teologia (FAJE-BH). Atualmente é professor titular e Diretor do Departamento de Filosofia da mesma Faculdade, bem como Editor de "Síntese - Revista de Filosofia". Tem experiência na área de Filosofia, com ênfase em Filosofia da Religião, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: transcendência, experiência de Deus, cultura moderna e sagrado.
