O objetivo deste artigo é analisar algumas especificidades do Iluminismo português e luso-brasileiro à luz do exemplo constituído pelo livro Ensaios sobre algumas enfermidades d’Angola (1799), escrito pelo médico luso-brasileiro José Pinto de Azeredo. A formação inicial de Azeredo, realizada nas universidades de Edimburgo e de Leiden, foi reinterpretada no contexto colonial de Angola. Dá-se particular atenção às interpretações historiográficas do Iluminismo que, a partir dos anos 1970, passaram a chamar atenção para as variações nacionais e locais das Luzes, enfatizando o papel desempenhado pelos contatos dos europeus com povos não ocidentais na gênese de algumas das principais ideias iluministas. Nos trabalhos científicos escritos por Azeredo, a medicina ilustrada de Edimburgo e de Leiden se encontrou com as enfermidades de Angola. O resultado desse encontro é, ele próprio, uma manifestação dos fluxos (globais) de informação que constituíam o Iluminismo
