Whoever stays silent when I went quiet cannot afford to die, before saying everything.

We are reminded here of the arrival in Brazil of the roman Levantado do chão, the first analyses of the novel and the evolutions of its characters who, at first voiceless, underprivileged and forgotten, became capable of uttering their own discourse and came to be the leaders of a transformative revolution. We also focus on some feminine characters from other novels of the same author, trying to show his special tenderness towards the strong women whom he boasts of having been the creator as well as the creature. We also study in Saramago’s works the question of religion, coming to the conclusion that he is a weird communist, pessimist at the core as well as a surprising atheist, having a surprising religious vein: in truth a great humanist, always worried about a problematizing dialogical enunciation, able to witness suffering and the maneuvers of power.
