In this article, the author initially, and succinctly, adresses the african novel, focusing on its emergence in Angola, marked by the publication, in 1934, of The Secret Of The Dead, by António de Assis Júnior. The analysis of the work draw attention to the fact that it was presented to the Portuguese colonial contest, organized by the Agencia Geral das Colónias, and to its appropriation by angolan literature. The theoretical framework is supported by the article of the Wole Soyinka and, above all, by the essays by Mário Pinto de Andrade, the main theoretician of the african literature in portuguese language.
