Abstract

In this work, we analyze the use of Brazilian Portuguese in the short story Rolézim, from the book O sol na cabeça, written by Geovani Martins. This study is justified by the fact that there is an interest in verifying some aspects of the adequacy of the language, especially Brazilian Portuguese, in order to actually observe its functioning. To carry out this article, we based ourselves on Cunha (2011) and Martelotta, Votre and Cezario (1996), exploring, based on excerpts from the story, some central principles and categories of the functionalist current, namely: grammaticalization, marking, informativeness, iconicity, transitivity and discursive plan. As a main result, it is clear how the short story Rolézim highlights the real use of the Brazilian Portuguese language, showing how its grammatical structure adapts to the communicative needs of a specific group, highlighting the importance of the functionalist approach in linguistic analysis.
