The purpose of this study is to analyze the cognitive phenomenon of metonymization in Libras lexicons. This analysis, among its propositions, emphasizes the intrinsic relationship between metonymy and iconicity (ALBRES, 2012; MURTA, 2020; SILVA JUNIOR, 2018). Furthermore, the aim is to investigate some metonymic lexicons in relation to the rejection undertaken by Libras speakers. This occurs because the conceptualizations of these lexicons are incomplete and/or incoherent. The conceptual incompleteness presented occurs, for the most part, since the metonymic characteristics of these words, contrary to what Abreu (2008) theorizes, are not the “most representative of this whole”, on the contrary, they present aspects that, mistakenly, try to carry out this representation, but in a flawed way. Therefore, in some cases, there is a need for a new idealization of these signs, in the search for metonymic characteristics that cover the cultural and identity aspects of the people who use them and/or the group to which they are referred.
