This paper draws the picture of a city that, thanks to its uniqueness throughout the nineteenth century, became one of the favorites of foreign travel narrative. Through the literary discourse, it will be mapped the image of Lisbon kept in the memory of European the visitors, noting its habits, customs, vicissitudes and multiplicities. Dipped in a diaphanous and distant scenario, foreign look allowed to draw a world view in the imperial capital that gave worlds to the world, a cosmopolitan metropolis and simultaneously a city stopped in a stone time that saw arriving caravels and ships, inspiring numerous reports that make up looks of an unusual modernity.
