Abstract

This article investigates the possible meanings of the work Fastigimia, written by the Portuguese scholar Thomé Pinheiro da Veiga, between 1604 and 1605. The analysis of representations relating to the period of exile experienced by the author in the Spanish city of Valadolide, capital, is prioritized. Castilian monarchy, then commanded by Philip III. Therefore, we first propose an approximation between the contents of Fastigimia and Fasti, a book written by the Latin poet Ovídio, still in Antiquity. Secondly, our analysis will focus on representations involving Portuguese and Spaniards present in Veiga's work, covering the most diverse themes of everyday life. From these procedures, it can be concluded that the period of estrangement of the literate from their homeland resulted in the construction of a hybrid narrative that sought to interpret the "place of destination" (Spain) always from the references provided by the "place of origin" (Portugal). Far from expressing a traumatic break with Portuguese roots, the analysis of Fastigimia would help to understand how the author conceived the cultural approximations and distances between Portuguese and Spaniards, integrated peoples, in that political-social context, through the Iberian Union (1580-1640).
