Memory duty, History, TestimonyAbstract
This article intends to look into the relationship between memory, history, and testimony, considering the history writing from the testimony. A report, a testimony given/made by someone who “overpassed the death”: the witness (Seligmman-Silva, 2003). This author describes past events through memories. Thus, memory is an important source for historical knowledge, because it is connected to an ambition: “to be loyal to the past”. However, it is important to discuss some conflict between memory and history about the use of testimonial reports to restore the past, resulting in the testimony crisis, despite Ricoeur (2007) claims that there is nothing better than a testimony to prove that something happened. The search for the truth and justice is essential, as well as the “memory duty”, according to Heymann (2006), who is with authors like Gagnebin (2006), Agamben (2008), and Halbwachs (1990) in the bibliography.
