Economia e História sob o olhar de Eric Hobsbawm: uma radiografia dos séculos XIX e XX (Economics and History from the perspective of Eric Hobsbawm: a radiography of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries)

Abstract

Palestra proferida em seminário organizado pelo Departamento de História, sobre a historiografia e o legado de Eric Hobsbawm – um dos maiores historiadores do século XX. Seu principal foco esteve na emergência e trajetória do capitalismo moderno e nas transformações sofridas pelo sistema, desde o fim da Idade Média. O texto trata de suas principais obras, privilegiando as ERAS – A Era das revoluções, A Era do capital, A era do império e a Era dos extremos – assim como o livro Tempos interessantes, uma verdadeira obra prima do século XX, em que ele assume o papel de observador participante analisando os principais fatos econômicos e políticos do seu tempo.

Abstract

Lecture given at a seminar organized by the Department of History on historiography and the legacy of Eric Hobsbawm - one of the greatest historians of the twentieth century. Its main focus was on the emergence and trajectory of modern capitalism and the transformations undergone by the system, from the late Middle Ages. The text comes to his major works, focusing on ERAS – The Age of Revolutions, The Age of Capital, The Age of Empire and Age of Extremes – just like the book Interesting Times, a true masterpiece of the twentieth century, in which he takes the role of participant observer analyzing the major economic and political events of his time.
