INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIETY IN ADAM SMITH:
revisiting the relationship between ethics and economics in the work of the Scottish thinker on the occasion of his tercentenary

This article intends to examine Smith's conception of the human social agent, notably in his condition as an
individual, and considering his action in the economic dimension of his daily life. We hope to show that his
vision regarding economic agency is much richer and more nuanced than is often presented. We will also argue that it has much to contribute to our efforts to understand the foundations of human behavior in relation to economic issues, as well as the role and significance that these issues can assume in the whole of human social life. Some of these aspects are particularly highlighted: the relationship between the individual and the technical material dimension of economic life, the relationship between individuals in the social dimension of economic life and the relationship between economic and supra- economic motivations in the lives and actions of individuals. In view of this, the more specific objectives of this article are established: 1) understand that Smith's emphasis on individual agency does not mean disregarding the moral and political condition of the human subject, as well as his original link to the universal community of nature, to use the expression of the Scottish thinker; 2) examine how modern Economic Science has sometimes reduced the individual to a kind of generic entity, receiving external stimuli and responding to these stimuli according to very restrictive purposes, such as maximizing their interest or utility.
