What are the obstacles Bissau-Guinean women face prior to and upon admission to the diplomatic career in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau? Women’s presence in diplomacy falls far behind any sort of parity all around the world, where men have predominantly occupied diplomatic positions as ambassadors, consuls and secretaries. In this paper, we analyse the obstacles Guinea-Bissau women face at two distinct moments: pre-admission and post-admission to the diplomatic career. We conducted interviews with Bissau-Guinean diplomats attempting to shed light on the aforementioned obstacles, stressing the challenges experienced not only in their personal trajectories, but also by women in Guinea-Bissau regarding their access to this political and bureaucratic sphere.
