With the latest events that took place in Lebanon, starting in October 2019, several questions about the country's governance are raised. Marked by a history of multiple internal conflicts and external interventions, the Lebanese Republic is the result of past decisions that have led to its current dilemmas. This article presents a history of the creation of Lebanon, from the formation of the Emirate of Mount Lebanon, through the French mandate, to the creation of "Greater Lebanon". Its multiconfessional society, and the transformations that took place during the French mandate, had profound implications for Lebanese politics and society. In the end, we discuss the protests that have occurred in the country since 2019, and the future of the sectarian political system that has persisted since the 1943 National Pact.
