Abstract

The presence of a rich environment during early childhood is crucial for brain development and language acquisition, because during this period of 0-3 of age that neural plasticity is at its apex, and specific stimulation is important so as not to compromise the development of specific areas of the cortex. This article summarizes essential aspects for brain development at a functional and structural level, highlighting the importance and effects of stimuli during the critical period. An introduction to brain development related to language acquisition is also presented, highlighting the importance of receptive vocabulary and how the parent’s Socio-Economic Status impacts on the child's understanding of oral language.
