CHALLENGES IN DEAF EDUCATION IN BRAZIL:

a critical analysis of the current approach

Abstract

This article discusses the theme: “Challenges in Deaf Education in Brazil: A critical analysis of the current approach”, with the aim of reflecting on the importance of deaf education, the advances and challenges related to the subject. The first moment is intended to present initial notes regarding the education of the deaf. Therefore, the second stage aims to delve deeper into the legal foundations, using legislation as a basis. In particular, Law nº. 9.394 of 1996, Law nº. 10.436 of 2002, Decree nº. 5.626 of 2005 and Law nº. 23.773 of 2021. Furthermore, the contribution of Silva (2018) and Vilhalva (2004), aspects related to bilingualism, the guiding principles for learning for deaf people, the challenges and perspectives in relation to Libras, the role of the interpreter and pedagogical practices for the inclusion of deaf students. Finally, there will be final considerations, presenting the challenges and advances in relation to deaf education and bilingualism.
