DEATH DRIVE IN FREUD: BETWEEN SPECULATION AND CLINIC

This article analyzes the main empirical substrates and clinical concepts of death drive through a careful reading of the first text, in which the concept is formulated and in the second main text it is present, respectively, Beyond the Pleasure Principle and The Ego and the Id. It was hypothesized that the death drive is introduced into Freudian metapsychology with strong appeal to biological arguments and has gained more consistency since 1923, with the concepts of defusion, aggression, sense of guilt and super-ego. The sense of guilt appears as a reading key in The Ego and the Id in associating aggression with the death drive as a consistent substrate of the concept. Finally, the article shows how the death drive is more easily associated with the clinical dimension since then.
