DIFFICULTIES FACED BY ADULTS WITH BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER IN ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS

Abstract

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a disorder that manifests itself as a diffuse pattern of instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image and affections. This instability is accompanied by impulsiveness that becomes evident in early adulthood and manifests itself in various situations, such as friendships, romantic relationships, family life, the workplace and other environments that can cause mood swings. The goal of this study was to investigate the difficulties that individuals diagnosed with BPD have in their romantic relationships. To this end, the work followed an organization based on socio-historical research of the term BPD, analysis of how their behavior can interfere in their love relationships and which treatment has the most scientific evidence for these adults. Therefore, an analysis was carried out of the accounts of people with BPD through Instagram and interviews with psychology professionals who work with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), the approach that has the best evidence for the treatment of people with borderline. Once this was done, data analysis categories were created to discuss the results of the interviews with the professionals, together with the selected discourses from Instagram and the theoretical research carried out. Finally, it should be emphasized that this study is of great social relevance, since this research makes it possible to raise awareness about BPD, its love relationships and the treatment with the best scientific evidence today, thus corroborating existing studies on BPD and considering the perspective of psychology professionals who are dedicated to treating these patients.
