Abstract

Considering the importance of social interaction for children’s socio-communicative development, the present research aims, based on a theoretical review, at bringing into light a discussion about the similarities of interactive contexts of children diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), and children with visual impairment, laying emphasis on the socio-communicative aspects.  Among the similarities between such children, the literature points out the difficulties to express and recognize emotions, the occurrence of repetitive behaviors, and the loss of shared-attention. Thus, taking into consideration the interactive contexts, the studies approaching this field highlight the importance of the mediator’s bi-directionality and responsiveness, so as to enhance those children’s social interaction, as well as the use of directive linguistic styles and concrete objects, based on the children’s behavioral and socio-communicative features. It is finally highlighted that the understanding of interacting contexts may contribute to the elaboration of intervening proposals which aim to empower such children’s development.
