Abstract

In this article we discuss the contradictions engendered by the development and use of hormonal contraceptives regarding sexual and reproductive rights, and control and medicalization of the woman’s body. From a bibliographic research, we explore the creation process of the hormonal contraceptive and its popularization in Brazil as a post-colonial country, as well as the insertion of this medication in the woman’s health field and its position in the struggle for sexual and reproductive rights. Analyzing the role of hormonal contraceptives as a dispositive for the control of the woman’s body, inserted in the biopower field. We conclude with an analysis of the elements found in the critiques to the hormonal contraceptive grounded on the exaltation of a “natural body”, and the possibilities of agency against to its use and to the dispositive of power it’s placed on
