Abstract

This is an ethnographic research that aimed to identify the physical attributes of rooms in a children’s hospital that can provide environmental discomfort and comfort, according to the perspective of the companions. Participants were 50 companions, 47 females and 3 males. The field record was used as a data collection tool. To analyze the data, Bardin’s thematic content analysis method was adopted. The results indicated four dimensions of analysis: environmental dimension, psychological well-being, affective, and professional. Among the physical attributes of negative valence, the rest bed was more frequent. On the physical attributes of positive valence, the view of the window and internal gardens in the hospital were highlighted by favoring well-being. Television and cell phone use were perceived as positive distractions. It was verified that the hospital structure should contain dialog spaces between companions, as well as green areas with free access.
