Abstract

This exploratory study aimed to investigate the talent development processes among the Yuhup. The data were constructed by qualitative procedures and analyzed by Qualitative Epistemology. There are no words to define talent in the Maku language, but the Yuhup people recognize artisans as talented people. The expression of talent is mediated by gender: men build ritual and fishing and hunting artifacts, while women dedicate themselves to basketry, clothing, and ornaments. Techniques and knowledge are transmitted transgenerationally through repetition and observation and as part of the family's routine. The following stood out as challenges for talent development: the early recognition of children and the training of teachers to work in Indigenous School Education. The need for future research is pointed out to outline indicators for the provision of services that promote the development of the potential of children and young talents in the Yuhup community.
