Abstract

This article aimed at analyzing coping strategies based on the social support perceived by poor university students to stay in Higher Education. It used a mixed approach of research in two public universities. The sample consisted of 251 poor students in the quantitative stage, from various areas of study. In the qualitative stage, there were 8 participants of high demand courses. The relevance of solidarity networks, reflected in the perception of social support among colleagues, coming from family members and the institution, is noteworthy. The specific strategies called confrontation, cooperation and assertion were identified as transformative strategies, while the polarization, invisibility, academic performance and participation in other training spaces were understood from the functions of reaction and adaptation. We conclude on the need to understand these mechanisms in order to plan actions that promote essential changes for a more open, plural and welcoming university for the historically marginalized groups.
